No exposed armpits and no espadrilles... Our style guru on office dressing for ...
When I was at Brentwood High School, I railed against the uniform. It comprised a horrible navy A-line skirt, felty navy blazer and navy sweater.
Summer term involved a blue and white seersucker dress. I rolled over my waistband to make the skirt shorter and teamed it with clumpy Freeman Hardy Willis platform shoes.
I knotted the shirt and sewed patches on to the blazer (in the early Seventies, we would buy little cloth anchors or flowers and sew them on to our clothes).
No palazzo pants No exposed armpits or thighs No jeans or leggings No string bracelets or awful, over-sized bobbly necklaces No asymmetric tops or batwing sleeves No polka dots, unless you want to end your days fetching the lattes Layer cleverly: thanks to air conditioning, your office could well be freezing Natural fabrics crease less after a long day sitting downI saw women in spray-on denim leggings, one-shouldered giant T-shirts knotted jauntily at the hip, gladiator sandals and espadrilles, denim shorts, vests, vests and more vests.
I had read not long ago about a new trend that showed women are dressing for the job they want, not the job they already have, because of the competitive nature of the workplace.
But given my admittedly unscientific observations, I’d say the majority of women are dressing for the unemployment line.
Visit an office block in Milan, Paris or New York and while the women are summery, sporting lots of sherbet colours and creams, there is not that ‘lived in a tent in Glastonbury’ rumpled feel about them.
If you want to be taken seriously at work, then you have to be more conventional and covered up.
This is nothing to do with sexism: I’m aghast at the numerous men not wearing socks, in shorts and unironed T-shirts. When I was the editor of a fashion magazine, I was always amazed that women in that industry insisted on turning up for work in rumpled drawstring linen, camisole tops, wedges and visible tan lines.
The office is not a place for frivolity, but there are ways of looking cool and fashionable at work, especially now the sales are in full swing.

A blazer looks great over a pretty dress. If you must wear a floral tea dress, don’t team it with a cardigan and Jelly shoes: your boss will assume you will soon be off on maternity leave. I like this dress by Reiss, Kate Middleton’s favoured label. It has a military feel, which means colleagues will do what you say. £159, reissonline.com.
