Famed high school basketball coach Bob Hurley speaks about hard work ...

Hurley, the highly successful coach of St. Anthony in Jersey City, crowned with a one-week camp set up by the leisure North Arlington with a speech of about 40 players. The camp was open to boys from fifth to ninth, and was open to players from Kearny and Lyndhurst and North Arlington. The camp ended Friday.

Ben Gamble, assistant coach of the Graduate School of Jersey City, ran the camp along with former Saint Anthony, who played Hurley in-many of which are either playing or having played for Division I schools basketball.

Hurley has been one of the top high school basketball coaches in the country over his 39-year career as the coach of St. Anthony. His teams have won 26 state championships, and have been the top team in the nation a handful of times. He's won more than 1,000 games at the high school level, and he was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Hurley stressed the lessons of life, both on and off the court—learn to dribble with your non-dominant hand and be sure to practice every day, he said. In the next breath it was keep up with your education and make good decisions on who your friends are.

But above all, the theme was a simple one: work hard, be determined to achieve your goal, and good things will come.

"Don't let a day go by where you don't try to reach your dreams," Hurley said. "You dream the dream because you think it's going to happen."

He later said it's the "anonymous time you put in" that separates the great ones from the good ones. He said those extra hours on the court or studying—the ones that no one else sees—need to be done in order to find further success.

Hurley used an example close to his own heart to show what determination and hard work can do: his own son, Bobby Hurley, despite being short by basketball standards at 6 feet tall, worked hard to be a star at St. Anthony, move on to play Division I basketball at Duke University and later in the NBA.

"You got to believe in yourself," Hurley said. "You got to be very, very tough."

After a brief talk, the young players asked him questions about the current state of NBA and the players in it—what will happen in regards to the lockout, who did he want to win the 2011 NBA Finals, and who's the best player in the NBA today? (It's Dirk Nowitzki, he said.)

Hurley said he's involved with youth camps throughout the summer, and not just in New Jersey. He spent the earlier part of the week at a camp in Boston, and said he's at a camp at least four days each week.
