Kla Ha Ya Days goes to the races

SNOHOMISH — Kla Ha Ya Days has added new features that include a Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby and a mascot bed rally for Frogtastic Kids' Fair at Snohomish Station Village, 2811 Bickford Ave. Events this week run through Sunday.

Kla Ha Ya Days' Frogtastic Kids' Fair features a bike rodeo, bike parade and pet show from 1 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Snohomish Station Village.

The bike rodeo from 3 to 6 p.m. lets riders show their skills on their bikes by navigating a bike course. Bike safety booths provided by the fire and police departments will be available for more information. Bike helmets will be given away while supplies last.

The bike parade begins after the rodeo at 5:30 p.m. Kids are only limited by their imagination to decorate their bikes.

“There is nothing better than an old fashion kids' bike parade,” said Jim Garcia, president of the nonprofit Kla Ha Ya Days Festival organization.

The Frogtastic Kids' Fair pet show will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday in front of Bridges Pets, 2929 Bickford Ave., in Snohomish Station. There'll be races for small, medium and large dogs. Kids can show off their dogs and compete for prizes like the dog with the biggest feet, the best dog trick or the dog most in need of grooming. Meet Dixie, a Snohomish police dog, learn ways to train your pet and even adopt one.

The Pinewood Derby, a Boy Scouts of America sanctioned event from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, is open to anyone from 5 to 18 years old. Home Depot will conduct free clinics to help racers cut, finish and assemble their cars. Home Depot will also supply free kits to build your own derby car. Race the cars in the Frog Derby Races during the Frogtastic Kids' Fair. The age divisions are 5-7, 8-9, 10-12, 13-14 and 15-18.

The Evergreen Speedway with Racey Raccoon will hand out prizes and show off the pace car. At 3 p.m. Thursday, Racey competes in the Mascot Bed Race Rally sponsored by People's Bank. Kla Ha Ya Days mascots Tad and Lils will also compete along with other mascots like Seahawks' Blitz. This will be a practice race before the Great Bed Race on from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday on First Street between Avenues A and C.

Five-person teams compete in the Great Bed Race. For the first time, participants can enter their own constructed beds if they follow the rules. Otherwise, teams race beds provided by the Kla Ha Ya Days Festival.

Raccoon School: Felt Continent Map

Print out outlines of the continents from a website such as Owl & Mouse .  I suggest choosing "World 1" at the 4x4 size. I started off trying to do each continent individually and ran into some trouble with the continents not being equally proportioned. Cut out each continent and pin them to a sheet of felt. You could also use iron-on transfer paper.  I purchased the felt for 29 cents a sheet at Michael's (they are running a coupon right now for 25% off your entire order, including sale items, expires July 23) .  I choose to follow the Montessori color-coding system for continents, so I bought seven different sheets in the appropriate colors (orange, brown, pink, green, red, yellow, white). Be aware that one yellow sheet is slightly too small to capture all of Asia. I pieced some of the scraps together to complete the continent. In hindsight, I wish I had just left it cut off, though. Using a sharp pair of scissors, cut the shape of the continents out of the felt. I was worried about precision, but it really wasn't difficult. Actually, the hard part is deciding how detailed to be and how to deal with islands and such.  I printed out labels from Free Montessori for Everyone , laminated them, and hot glue-gunned them to little pieces of felt (using the Montessori color coding system). I created a felt board by hot gluing a big piece of blue felt (about $2 at Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft) to a piece of foam board ($2.89 at Target). I can see using this felt board for other projects in the future.  I printed and colored this world map to use as a control of error. The children use it as a guide as they place the felt pieces onto the board. I introduced this project to the boys this morning, and they've already made huge progress with the intended learning objective (something I've had a hard time getting them to focus on up until now).
