The Full Moon casts its spell over Dunn Hill 2 Speedway

Events running from this Friday night were sponsored by the Auto Ferrell Dushore. Events of the evening, a typical make-up stocks of the street and a complete program.

The street stocks had a large field of racing for the night. The rainout was the first feature race on the ticket. Josh Morrow Josh Ames and brought the field to the green flag. Ames took the lead with Ricky Davis and Ben Hulslander adding to the three-way battle for the win. Added to the mix of cars, hoping to catch the win away was Bill Price and Bobby Maynard. Price took the lead on lap 6, with Maynard on his bumper.A warning comes after several cars are grouped in the second corner. On the restart as the price in the 48 and 29 in Maynard were looking for the competition hall. This brought on another caution with two cars going side stands. The machine price could continue after the pit stop. This gave the lead to Jason Benjamin. A restart of the battle was close and intense with Ricky Davis and Ernie Martin back in the race for the win. With four laps to go another caution flew and the leader Benjamin had a front left tire going flat. Jason managed to take the flat tire to capture his first win of the 2011 season. Finishing in second was Ricky Davis, but did not pass post race inspection, that gave second to Ernie Martin, Josh Ames was third, Bill Price was fourth and Bobby Hall was fifth.

The IMCA mods were the next feature up. Larry Colton and Eddie McKernan paced the field. When the green flag fell it was McKernan who grabbed the lead. Eddie had strong competition from Victor McNeal and Eddie Sites. It was a tough night for Ray McClure and Matt Sobiech with both drivers suffering mechanical problems forcing them out of the event.Victor McNeal was looking to pick up another victory for the record books, but could not take the 83 to McKernan. This gave the victory to Eddie McKernan, Victor McNeal second, current Sites point leader Eddie third, fourth and Shawn Bruce completed the top five was Harry Ely.

Nineteen cars of high-class front-wheel drive made their way on the runway surface. Kaycee Zawatski and Kory Lewis brought the field to the green. A fierce battle ensued between the first five cars. Kenny Underwood was in a borrowed car after his No. 16 suffered mechanical problems. He worked his way to battle for the lead with Nick Wesneski, Mike Ely and Andrew Dorman. It would be Dorman who took command of the event. The battle behind Dorman between father and son of the Underwoods would have the fans on their feet. Add to that mix Mike Ely who was looking to capture another win for his records. Unfortunately for the drivers behind the Dorman machine they would have to settle finishing just that way. As the checkers flew, it was Andrew Dorman returning to victory lane. Rounding out the top five were Klem Underwood, Kenny Underwood, Mike Ely and Rick Sinsabaugh.

RV Tire Safety: Tire Covers - Do they do any good?

The owner was complaining about the cover degrading in the sun so he was of the opinion the cover wasn't worth the cost. I have to wonder how he failed to properly interpret the proof that the cover was protecting his tires. How would he answer the question: Which would you rather have degrade due to being in the sun? Your tires or the low cost cover? Increased temperature causes continued and accelerated chemical reaction which "ages" a tire faster than when the tire is cool. A rule of thumb would be that the rate a tire ages doubles with every 18°F increase in temperature. We can see the result of old rubber on the surface. What we don't see is the more brittle rubber of the internal tire structure. As rubber gets more brittle with age it also looses strength. Seems I heard in a tire safety class that if you are going to be parked on concrete for very long (a week or more??), you should put a barrier of some sort between your tire and the concrete. I don't remember the reasoning... seemed like the concrete interacted in a bad way with the rubber? Any truth to this, or am I "mis-remembering"? Thanks.

When a tire is rolling down the road the temperature of the tire tread is typically arround 150 degrees for a passenger car at freeway speeds. In racing, the tire pressure, caster and camber are adjusted to make the tire run at about 190 degrees. Some race crews use higher temps. The temperature at which you start to worry is more like 300 degrees. Tires running down the highway normally run 30 to 60 degrees F hotter than ambient. Race tires have a life measured in minutes of use at racing speed or possibly months in controlled condition storage so their info doesn't translate to highway use for tires.I also believe that their max is closer to 215 than anywhere near 300 and wait for the tire exposed to 300 will fail in minutes. I know that some materials, tires can lose more than 50% of their strength much above 250 F.
