Jensen: Amid crisis, neighbors step up for one another

However, this economic crisis has saddened many a heart in President Harry S. Truman’s hometown. High unemployment rates, subprime mortgage lending and more have increased homelessness in our community. Homelessness statistics include misplaced individuals and families who may be living in cars, under bridges, or in local shelters, and those living with friends or family who are unable to provide permanent, adequate and safe housing. OK, my heart is sad. I drive through neighborhoods where empty homes and vacant swingsets trigger thoughts of fear. But then, I look across the street and see signs of hope. Houses being built with love by people who have decided to put sorrow into action by helping their fellow man. Habitat for Humanity’s core mission/vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Named in honor of our former president, Truman Heritage Habitat For Humanity includes volunteers and staff who work alongside current and future Habitat homeowners to build houses that are sold to partner families at no profit. Families are selected based on need, ability to pay the no-interest loan and willingness to partner. Homeowner (partner) families volunteer 350 hours of “sweat equity,” by working alongside community volunteers. Homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are then used to build more Habitat houses. “Just remember this, Mr. Potter, that these people you’re talking about, they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath? Anyway, my father didn’t think so. People were human beings to him. But to you, a warped, frustrated old man, they’re cattle. Well in my book, he died a much richer man than you’ll ever be.”

Jackman boy, 5, killed when logging truck overturns into house

I pray for the family in this time of sorrow. It angers me that this happened. The posted speed limit is 25mph. The people of Jackman, including myself, have been trying to slow down the trucks for years. I have made many calls, nothing is ever done.
