Scott Glenn, Sam Shepard team up for Boise Contemporary Theater
Two old friends sip bourbon on a porch at an isolated cabin, waiting for a total eclipse of the moon on a summer night. Thats the set up for Sam Shepards Ages of the Moon.
Their reunion comes out of desperation. They reflect, bicker and test each other until 50 years of love, friendship and rivalry are pushed to the boiling point. From there, its anyones guess.
These kinds characters are the mark of a Shepardian play: Rough, untethered, they live outside the mainstream by wit, humor and, often, their fists.
They will be played by two iconic American actors when Shepard and Scott Glenn perform a reading of Moon to benefit Boise Contemporary Theater on July 28.
Shepard is larger than life both personally and professionally.
He lived with seminal rocker Patti Smith and now shares a home with two-time Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange. He wrote a song with Bob Dylan, contributed material to Oh, Calcutta!, worked the rodeo circuit, and developed a serious film career. Shepard received an Oscar nomination for 1983s The Right Stuff, which costars Glenn.
He also is considered one of Americas greatest playwrights with a list of taut, visceral plays as disturbing as they are funny, including Cowboy Mouth (with Smith), True West, Fool for Love, Curse of the Starving Class and Buried Child, which won a Pulitzer in 1979.
On the other side of the stage is Glenn, one of Hollywoods most prolific and respected actors. Hes starred in such diverse films as Silence of the Lambs, Silverado, The Bourne Ultimatum and W.
One of his more recent films, the indie feature Magic Valley written and directed by Idahos Jaffe Zinn, helped provide the connection for this reading.
Idaho native Heather Rae produced Zinns film Buhl. Shes also a longtime friend of Shepard. When the idea to do a reading to benefit BCT came up, it was Rae who suggested Moon and the deal fell into place, says BCT producing artistic director Matthew Cameron Clark.
Both of these busy, iconic men of stage and film have a real interest in helping keep American theater going, he says. That theyll do this to benefit a company thats working to produce new work in Idaho is pretty amazing.

The iTunes Session also serves as a potent reminder of the band’s strength in a live setting. Recorded live in a Los Angeles studio, singer/guitarist Colin Meloy, guitarist Chris Funk, keyboardist/accordionist Jenny Conlee, bassist Nate Query, and drummer John Moen were joined by touring band member Sara Watkins, who contributes background vocals, fiddle and guitar. The Decemberists’ The King Is Dead debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 after its release in January. The album—a profoundly simple set of 10 concise country-inflected songs produced by Tucker Martine and featuring guests Gillian Welch and Peter Buck—was also recently selected by NPR Music listeners as the #1 album in a poll of the best music of the year (so far).
