Personalized Easter Baskets For Kids

August, last call of summer

Don’t look now, but summer is slipping through our sweaty hands. We have been too busy trying to cool off to notice.

Two relentless weekends of Bix have mercifully faded away; the fair has folded up its tents.

Now, we’re into August, the last honest-to-goodness month of summer.

August is the month when we stumble through nothing. Print your own calendar, but it’s a month when we have no official holidays, a month when we don’t have to send Valentines or Christmas cards — or cards to anyone for that matter, unless it is their birthday. We don’t have to climb into the attic to look for Easter baskets.

August is a lazy month.  I know that it is a lazy month because Wednesday is National Lazy Day. There is a day for everything in August. Aug. 13 is Blame Someone Else Day.

August is a month when we can think that we are kids again. I thought of that when I saw a personalized license plate the other day:

Erma Bombeck, one of the grand talents of our time, had the right idea when she wrote:

“I don’t know whom to praise for this wonderful month, but August is the month for everyone to lie back and wallow in the knowledge that there is absolutely no occasion to rise to.”

An award with a-peel

A whoopee reason to say “hooray” … the Top Banana award won by D’port West High cheerleaders at the Elite Stunt Camp at Illinois State University, Normal.

“The Top Banana is the Holy Grail of the camp,” says Kathy Murrens, chairmom of the West High kids.  “It’s better than any ribbons or trophies. The Top Banana is the true prize.”

It’s a bulky prize, not the usual award to gather dust on a shelf.

A 3-foot inflatable banana is signed throughout the week by camp leaders and coaches of 16 other cheerleading squads from around the Midwest.

On the last day, leaders pick one team to be the Top Banana, the squad they think has shown the most spirit, leadership, sportsmanship and representation of their school.

West High’s cheerleading coach, Melanie Gray. is giving her squad a banana split party.

From far-far-away, a hail to the Hawkeyes

Molly Shlaes,  formerly of Moline, attended the University of Iowa for two years and is now at Ohio State.  She still bleeds black and gold.

This summer, Molly is studying in Prague. She calls her grandma, Bev Sitrick of Bettendorf, to tell that she was climbing some tall steps in the capital of the Czech Republic wearing a Hawkeye shirt.  She hears a loud call, “Go Hawks.” It is from some Des Moines guy.

@Grandmaster0Gulgan I was drawing a link between a diet of raw vegetables and good health (e.g. monkeys that felt detrimental after being on a modern human food diet were placed on a raw vegetable diet to restore health.) Honestly, I’d love to see real studies, if there are any, showing that cooking food destroys health enzymes. It’s a tough job discerning who tells the truth because everyone has a vested interest.
