Old Reno state nursery gear going up for sale

Vehicles, tractors and thousands of pieces of tools and other equipment used at the former Marietta State Nursery in Reno will be sold at auction this Saturday.

Officials hoping to see the 95-acre tree farm sold and developed will also be on hand but the land is not part of the auction.

The local Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) nursery, the last of three such facilities in the state, closed in October 2008. The facility opened here in the 1920s and produced about two million seedlings each year for reforestation efforts, said former employee Dave Glass, now assistant manager for the ODNR Division of Forestry.

"I never thought I'd see this day come," Glass said. "It's truly the end of an era."

Glass said the site is full of stories and history. Many of those items, including antique hand tools, jars and mousetraps, will be part of the sale. But some old journals and photos found when cleaning out are being entrusted to Marietta Township Trustees, who plan to put them on display in the township's community center.

During its peak, the farm employed about 15 full-time employees and 40 seasonal workers.

Glass said from the 1930s to early 1970s, many of the farm's workers were inmates who lived in one of two dorms at the rear of the property.

"At one time, we had up to 60 inmates. Some were conscientious objectors during World War II, others were just low-risk offenders," Glass said. "When I worked here, we all joked that half of Marietta worked out here and the other half never even knew we were here."

Kevin Kidwell, 59, of Knox County, was there Thursday looking over the many items expected to be sold Saturday. The auction items are available for preview again today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for two hours prior to the start of the Saturday sale.

"I've got a farm and I like to buy and sell machinery a little," he said. "The state owned this stuff and although it was used, they generally took pretty good care of their equipment. So, it should be OK."

Kidwell had his eye on a bulldozer and a few tractors.

"I'm pretty sure I'll be back on Saturday," he said. "A few things have caught my eye."

Through a memorandum of understanding with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Southeastern Ohio Port Authority has worked with area residents over the last several months to develop a plan to sell the former 95-acre tree farm.

Port Authority officials plan to be at the sale to met with potential buyers.
