MOORHEAD – Tom Anderson has been fixing shoes since he was 12 years old.
The 69-year-old Barnesville man started his business, Tom’s Shoe and Tarp Repair Inc., in 1968. The business has moved around several times over the years and is now in a new location at 1608 1st Ave. N., Moorhead.
Anderson said the new location is set up perfectly for the business, the new shop has more room to work on boat tarps and canopies, and it offers better access for parking.
Matt’s Automotive Service Center, which rented part of Anderson’s former building just down the street from the new location, needed more space, so Anderson moved out and leased the whole building to the auto repair shop, he said.
With the downturn in the economy, Anderson said his business is thriving as more people look to repair instead of buying new.
“You can repair your shoes for a fraction of what you’re going to pay for a new pair,” Anderson said. “Some work boots are over $200. You can get soles and heels put on for $40.”
Most people don’t realize that shoes can often be fixed, he said.
“It’s been a throw-away society for quite some time,” Anderson said. “It’s coming back to where we’re extremely busy because of the times and the tightness of money, the economy, people are repairing more.”
Tom’s Shoe and Tarp Repair fixes shoes, boots, jackets, zippers, luggage, trampolines, pickup tonneau covers, tarps, and purses.
“If you’ve got a lady with a nice Coach purse that’s looking kind of shabby, we can make it look like new,” Anderson said.
He sells shoe laces, arch supports and shoe polish.
Anderson also does a lot of orthopedic work for people with one short leg.
“Most all shoes can be built up,” he said.
Anderson moved to the area in 1962 and worked for another shoe repair company before deciding in 1968 to start his own business.
He used to own Tom’s Shoe Repair in West Acres Mall in Fargo, but sold it to Mike and Beth Nelson in January 2006.
