Summer travelers gone searching for an America that's now changed
CENTRAL OREGON COAST – “I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why; counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike, they’ve all come to look for America,” states Paul Simon in his iconic Sixties song that laments a changing America from 50 years ago; while summer travelers are also searching for what was Route 66, low price gas, funky dinners and wide open spaces “that don’t cost you an arm and a leg to visit,” said one tourist camping along Oregon’s coast that’s still free.
While there’s little left of the famed Route 66, and gas prices nationwide are still near $4 per gallon, there’s still an America to be found this summer vacation season, say local holiday makers who are finding Oregon’s 365 miles of “free” coastal beaches a great deal, along with free or low rate beach camping if you’re willing to lend park officials a hand. At the same time, the U.S. Travel Association said in in a recent news release that the country can create "1.3 million jobs" if U.S. communities look at ways and means to get people back on the road -- to look for America -- like they did back in the 1950's and '60s.
"Increasing travel to the United States is the most effective form of economic stimulus—supporting communities, injecting billions into the U.S. economy and creating millions of new American jobs. Recapturing America's historic share of worldwide overseas travel would create up to 1.3 million U.S. jobs by 2020 compared with 2010 and produce $859 billion in cumulative additional economic output," stated the U.S. Travel Association.
Visitors find central Oregon coast beach camping a great summer vacation deal
When Lenard Schee first traveled down the Oregon coast in the early 1980’s it was such a pleasurable excursion that he returned again and again.
For this summer 2011 trip, Schee ended his journey at the Beachside State Recreation Site near Waldport along the central Oregon coast. “We figured the drive, one way, from our home in Alberta (Canada), to be 1,200 miles this far to Beachside. Funny, but it’s become tradition that we end our trip to Oregon with a last camp-out here.”
Schee first traveled alone as a teenager, but in recent years this computer technician has added family passengers for his annual “holiday.”
“I’m here with my wife Johanna and sons Andre and Peter. We all really love camping in Oregon because we’re so close to the Pacific and the wide beaches,” he said while going about the usual camper chores of disconnecting his truck from his camper rig and then sorting out the camp space at a popular park called “Beachside.
