2012 Nissan Versa sedan: A sexier subcompact?
A remarkable success in its first edition, the Versa sedan arrived on our shores in 2007, and has since become the second highest-selling car in its class, behind the Hyundai Accent. That first generation was roomy, reliable and affordable. It wasn't pretty, but it darn well did the job. Now for 2012, under a new, sleekly sculpted skin, the Versa sedan is set to pick up where the last one left off and be the country's least expensive car at $11,798. Under the new, sexier sheetmetal of the Versa sedan is a second generation 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine rated at 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft. of torque - largely the same output as the outgoing model's 107 hp and 111 lb-ft. It's sufficient, if not exciting, muscle. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard, but most drivers will opt for the automatic Continuously Variable Transmission, which is also redesigned for 2012. The CVT takes some getting used to, compared with a regular automatic because it uses a belt drive instead of stepped gears, but I found it to be smooth and definitely a help with maximizing fuel efficiency. Actually, the 2012 Versa is the first Nissan to wear the company's PUREDRIVE badge, which emcompasses steps like the CVT and new dual injectors inside the engine to maximize fuel economy (more on this later…). The most noticeable aesthetic improvements in the new Versa sedan are the rear overhang and striking taillight configuration. While the wheelbase remains the same, the overhang is 69 mm longer than the last Versa sedan, allowing for more rear seat and trunk space. On that note, one of the most impressive features of the new generation is the rear legroom, which is considerable- especially for a small car. Trunk space is best-in-class at 419 litres, and a 60/40 rear split seat is available on the mid- and high-level SV and SL models. The interior is otherwise functional and of consistently good quality, especially the seats and iPod interface. The former are simple and comfortable, the latter satisfyingly intuitive. Rare-for-this-segment navigation and Bluetooth phone connectivity are also optional. The standard safety equipment, too, is impressive, with six airbags as well as Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control, ABS and Brake Assist. Fuel economy is also impressive, with Nissan claiming an average of 6.0 L/100km in combined city and highway driving for its CVT- a one litre improvement over the 2011 model year. The manual transmission's average numbers are a bit higher at 6.2007 Hyundai Accent - News

Competition is fierce, as the subcompact market has shown a 40% growth over the last four years, and includes heavy hitters like the Hyundai Accent, Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris. The 2012 model marks the first major overhaul for the second-generation
