Market to be splendid addition to uptown

When Christy Shi, executive director of the Charlotte City Market, told 75 or so people gathered in uptown Charlotte Monday that she needed their ideas about how to make the new market prosper, she wasn't just being polite. Among those at the Seventh Street Station meeting were farmers and food vendors, whose involvement will be key to the venture's success. As they quickly learned, the market - to open in October - is very much a work in progress. Their input will help shape it.

The privately funded market is a dream come true for center-city promoters. In the early 1980s, when the state was seeking a site for a regional farmer's market, there was talk of a center-city location, but state officials chose a tract about three miles from the airport. The market on Yorkmont Road is a joy to visit, but its isolated location creates no urban synergy.

The goal of Charlotte's new year-round indoor market is to be open six days a week, and location is a key asset. In the former Reid's Fine Foods space, it's two blocks from busy North Tryon Street, yards from the Lynx light rail line, flanked by ImaginOn and the Levine Museum of the New South. A new 12-story UNC Charlotte building and planned developments by Daniel Levine are nearby, as are Johnson & Wales University and Central Piedmont Community College, which are involved in the project.

At Monday's meeting, attendees shared ideas about how to promote the market. Among them: Involve local culinary schools. Make the market reflect the community's ethnic diversity. There were questions: What's "local" food? How will the new market affect existing ones? How much will vendors pay for space? Could there be a satellite market at the Transit Center, convenient to bus riders? There was agreement on some fundamentals. The market should be known for high quality. It should help create a regional food system. Vendors should have a voice in its operation. And it should allay suburbanites' perennial concern about anything uptown: Where do I park?

Moira Quinn of Charlotte Center City Partners, which launched the project, had a ready response about parking: The market is on the ground floor of a seven-story parking garage, where customers may park free for 90 minutes.

The new market will feature farm products, but it won't be simply a farmers market. It's likely to include a cafe, wine bar, prepared food vendors, bakers, artists and musicians. A strong focus on wellness and nutrition will reflect the involvement of Carolinas HealthCare System and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, major providers of the $1 million initial funding.

One of the sections in Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers that generates incredible visitor interest and responses is “We Shall Overcome.” Water fountains with signs for “colored” and “white” originally installed in Charlotte City Hall in the 1950s help illustrate the segregated South. Visitors can take a seat at a recreated lunch counter to watch videos of local Civil Rights leaders talking about their roles in the Sit-in Movement. News footage of Civil Rights events, such as the Selma Bridge confrontation, plays on a TV in a 1960s-era living room.

Upstairs, COURAGE: The Carolina Story That Changed America exhibit, visitors learn about the “doll test” and research conducted for Brown v. Board if Education.

A large reproduction of the petition, signed in 1949 at a meeting in Liberty Hill AME Church is displayed with photos of the individuals—many children and teenagers at the time—who signed it.

Later on in the exhibit, visitors meet Thurgood Marshall, who at the time worked for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and was persuaded to take the South Carolina case, and would ultimately argue it in front of the Supreme Court. In researching and preparing for the case, the famous “doll test” was conducted in select communities, providing critical evidence for Marshall and his team.
