Patch Picks: Five Fourth of July Recipes

Red, white, and blue berries are a crowd pleaser for any backyard BBQ or party. This easy recipe will have everyone talking. You will need strawberries, white chocolate chips, and blue sprinkles. First, melt the white chocolate chips. Dip the strawberry in the melted white chocolate so that about half of the berry is covered. Then dip only the bottom tip in the blue sprinkles. Lay them on wax paper to dry. Voila! You have a red, white and blue snack. Red, hot, and blue buffalo wings are a delicious treat for the fourth. You will need about 20 chicken wings, 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, salt to taste, 1/2 cup of butter, 1/2 cup of hot pepper sauce, and 1 cup of melted butter. Mix the flour, cayenne pepper and salt and cover the wings with the mix. Mix the butter and hot sauce, and dip the wings in the mix. Cook the wings on the grill until they are no longer pink in the middle.  Firework Kabobs are always a hit. For 20 kabobs, you will need salt and pepper to taste, 10 skewers, 20 steak tips or turkey tips, 4 red peppers, 4 tomatoes, and 4 onions. Cut the onions, tomatoes, and peppers into bit size chunks. Place the chunks on the skewers, alternating each ingredient. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Fire up the grill and cook until the tips are no longer pink in the center.  Stars and strips cake is a staple at any Fourth of July party. You will need a cake mix, vanilla frosting, strawberries, and blueberries. Bake your favorite flavor cake (be sure to use a rectangular cake pan) and cover with vanilla frosting. Cut the strawberries in half, and use them to make the stripes of the flag. Use blueberries to make the stars. Party-pleaser dip can be made with a microwave and works best with tortilla chips. You will need one container of sour cream, one container of salsa, and one package of shredded cheese. Spread sour cream evenly over a large serving plate, covering the entire surface. Pour the container of salsa on top of the sour cream, spread evenly.

HEALTHY PLATE: Recipe for easy lunch box fruit dippers

In constructing a healthful dip for fruit, the main problem lies in the base of the dip. You want something that doesn't pile on the fat or sugar, but still is interesting enough that you want to dunk your apple wedges and strawberries in it.

You probably don’t need any strawberry recipes, they’re best eaten out of hand just after a cold wash. But in case you are looking for something to dip those delicious strawberries in, here are two versions of a fruit dip that we have used and enjoyed. One uses cows dairy and the other is raw/vegan since we eliminated dairy from our diet about two years ago due to allergies. Again, there are no photographs of the dip, but I hope that doesn’t stop you!

This would be delicious at you Pioneer Day bbq, just a thought.

Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy. Refrigerate to thicken, mixing it up a little just before serving.

* to get the top cream out of a can of coconut, let the can of coconut milk sit for a day or tow untouched. With a can opener, open the can and spoon out the top thick creamy part. Some brands of coconut milk separate better than others, try to get a good quality milk. This will not work with the coconut milks found in the refrigerated section or in the tetra paks.
