Otay 'giveaway,' ethics panel, entitlements, driver ed, UCSD

In response to “Public must act to block Otay giveaway” (Editorial, July 19), on the Otay Water District board’s decision to provide lifetime retirement health benefits to district managers and their spouses: I thank the U-T for reporting this story and staying with it. The board’s action cannot be justified under any circumstance and especially in today’s poor economy.

The fact that the board would even contemplate such a benefit, especially that eligibility requires only 15 years’ employment, shows a lack of good judgment and complete disregard for the community. To justify it by saying it’s needed to retain or attract good employees is just plain false. To my knowledge, there is no private-sector company that offers this benefit.

I see the San Diego Ethics Commission fined former City Council candidate Robert Ilko Jr. $2,000 for not having his paperwork on a total of $3,220 of contributions (“Ex-council candidate fined following audit,” Local Reports, July 18) and other campaign violations. The candidate had dropped out of the race three months before the June primary.

Why would the commission even select this file to look at? Millions of dollars of contributions are given to candidates in the city, and we spend time and money to investigate a man who dropped out of the race and spent $2,000. What a joke. -- Dave Pierce, San Diego

Letter-writer Ron Griffin commented that Social Security was never intended to be an “entitlement” program and should not be so labeled because the benefits belong to those who contribute to it (July 18). However, that is exactly the definition of “entitlement.”

Social Security was meant to be an entitlement program, contrary to Griffin’s assertion. The problem here is that because many politicians have referred to nonentitlement welfare programs mentioned in the letter as “entitlements,” they’re all lumped together. Social Security should not be lumped into the same label as welfare programs. -- Glenn A. Walker, San Diego

In response to “Auto Club finds more ignore anti-texting law” (Local, July 18): When I was in school, driver education classes were offered. We learned the rules of the road from a teacher. We also learned driver courtesy (signaling before you turned, for instance). Today, it appears that no one alerts other drivers of their intentions.

The city of Sand Diego is a part of the state of California. This is also California's second largest city. Furthermore, it is also the eighth-largest city of the United States. The name San Diego was derived from Saint Didacus. White, Hispanic, Black, Asian and others were the people living in this city.

I have known this place for almost 20 years and I haven't even knew all about the Kumeyaay Indians. I guess, that's because I wasn't really that good in listening to our history teacher in our history class. But because of the Internet, now I know. Thanks to my friend for recommending to me to read one of her blogs about San Diego.

San Diego, as far as I know is one of the most beautiful places to visit when you go to CA. It is only two hours away from Los Angeles. However, if you are finding a new place to live in, I recommend you to list San Diego as one of your choices. It is because the weather is great all year around.

It is not only that, San Diego has many beautiful places to go to. Like for example, the city's gorgeous beaches. Coronado beach for an instance is nominated as one of the top ten best beaches in US. Another one is the Balboa Park. This Park has sixteen plus museums, eight gardens, and it has also the most beautiful Spanish architecture.

Finding a great place to live in, in this very gorgeous city is not that hard. With all the homeowner insurance that would always help you face emergencies that your house may encounter. You may ask, how can I get the best homeowner insurance that would really suit my needs. First is that you should look around. Ask a friend or a relative about what company they are in. This would surely help.

The second would be, you need to choose the company with a policy that has a high deductible one. It is because, when you choose the one that has a low deductible, your monthly payments will surely be higher.

And for the last one, it would be about your car insurance. Getting a car and a home insurance in the same company will give you a better and lower price. So, think about combining these policies.

Actually, there are still other tips out there that are still not covered in this paper. That is why I encourage you to seek for more so that you'll have the best homeowner insurance provider out there. And always remember; be sure you will be able to review any policy before signing any papers. Enjoy your new and secured house in San Diego.
