More specifically, Polaris is a molecular diagnostic assay that assesses whether a patient is likely to have a slow-growing indolent form of prostate cancer that can be safely monitored through active surveillance, or a more aggressive form of the disease that would warrant aggressive intervention, such as radical prostatetectomy, or radiation therapy. A study that Myriad presented at the ASCO meeting in Chicago in June showed that Polaris is the strongest predictor of cancer deaths among prostate cancer patients who were managed through “watchful waiting” when needle biopsy is analyzed. The study also demonstrated that Polaris Is the most predictive of outcome when compared with current clinical tests, such as Gleason score or PSA. Myriad expects Polaris will grow to become a large contributor to total revenues by 2012. The company’s strategy of expanding into Europe is also encouraging, says Zacks, as it represents a huge new opportunity, The size of the European molecular diagnostic market is about 75% of the U.S. market. The company expects to initially target opportunities in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. The next target after establishing its presence in Europe is Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.
