The hunt is on for the nation's greenest fingers

The hunt is on for Kiwi gardeners great, and best for the country's vegetable patch and intrigue school community. NZ Gardener magazine, in association with Kiwicare, a call for applications NZ Gardener 2011 Gardener of the year.

With over $ 20,000 in prizes and new categories for the school and community gardens just presented, NZ Gardener editor Jo McCarroll says the competition, now in its fifth year, aims to celebrate the heroes of horticulture New Zealand.

"Some people create and maintain beautiful gardens throughout the country, but that's not what this competition is about," says Jo. "Gardener of the Year is about recognizing the incredible gardeners who make a difference at the local level, often working to make their communities stronger, happier places and healthier.

"Last year we had regional finalists who had done amazing things," she said. "Our Waikato finalist Alwyn Seeley had spent 60 years planting native trees to attract birds in central Hamilton.The Cleveland Otago our finalists had donated more than two million daffodil bulbs to the city of Dunedin to be planted in parks and public spaces. On the West Coast regional finalist Barbara Forrest has created an old fashioned flower garden for patients in the dementia unit at Greymouth Hospital, where his father is a resident. "

The winner of the Year Gardener's overall title is decided by public vote, and in 2010 it was Canterbury Jonesy Jones' Alan, a volunteer who had begun teaching children to Leeston primary fruit growing and veges and ended inspired by the whole community to get more.

"In fact, the winner has come to Canterbury for the last two years," says Jo. "So it will be interesting to see the garden city, it can be a hat-trick and win again this year!"

New categories for the school and community gardens needed to be introduced due to the explosive growth of such initiatives throughout New Zealand, Jo said.

"Gardening brings people together so often this year and people celebrate we recognize some of the amazing gardens created by community groups and people inspire the next generation of gardeners in schools across the country. I expect a very large number of entries in these new categories. "
