Lights to shine at Relay for Life luminaria
One of the members suggested lining the track with luminaria bags to enable the participants to see the track as they walked or ran. The committee immediately purchased what they needed to implement the “luminaria light” idea. When they lit the candles in the bags that night, it changed the atmosphere at the track. The soft lighting was conducive to talking about why everyone was there — to fight cancer and honor those who had survived and those who had lost the battle. The next year, the Relay For Life of Tacoma committee (who had heard about what a beautiful experience the candles had produced) and a few other Relay committees included a luminaria ceremony, honoring cancer survivors and remembering those who had lost the battle. Everyone who took part in the luminaria ceremony was deeply touched. The ceremony grew in popularity and eventually became part of Relay For Life events across the country. Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation. Relay For Life unites friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools and churches ... people from all walks of life. Brian and Roxanne's Wedding
Brian and Roxanne were married this past weekend at the Ten Oaks Ballroom. These two people truly are best friends and it was such an honor to marry them. They had an awesome candle lighting ceremony for a very special reason… both Brian and Roxanne’s parents had wonderful marriages. Roxanne said about her parents marriage, “It inspired me to wait until later in life and not settle. I waited until I found the one person who was truly my best friend AND my one true love.” Their parents felt the same way and also had candle lighting ceremonies at their weddings all those years ago. During Roxanne’s parents honeymoon they actually made taper candles…. the very same taper candles that all these years later Brian and Roxanne used in their wedding ceremony! But it gets better. Brian’s parents had saved their center unity candle from their wedding and Roxanne and Brian got to use their candle too. Having the mothers come up and light their own candles (once again) and pass them down to their children was one of those moments I will never forget. I know Roxanne and Brian’s love light will continue to burn just like their parents love has. Check out the candle pictures below.
