VOLCANOES in Melbourne? But yes, there are few.

They are everywhere in Melbourne, in fact, but do not hold your breath waiting to toast marshmallows on some molten rock.

In the west there Warrenheip Mt, Mt Derrimut and organ pipes, and north is Mount Macedon, Hanging Rock and Mt Cooper.

In the east, Mt Dandenong ago, the top of Ferny Creek and One Tree Hill and the peninsula is a place of hills too, with Arthur's Seat, Mount Eliza and Mt Martha.

It’s been a long time since Melbourne’s volcanoes have erupted (yes, even those at Smorgy’s in Bundoora and Volcano Joe’s in Burwood have gone silent), but there are a couple of active volcanoes around Victoria.

However, it’s unlikely they will erupt any time soon, so there’s no reason to call off your picnic at Hanging Rock.

Mt Macedon erupted 360 million years ago, and Mt Dandenong hasn’t seen lava in 300 million years.

Mt Cooper, in Bundoora, which at 137m is one of the highest points close to the city, erupted 9.2 million years ago.

A spritelier volcano is Mt Derrimut, near Sunbury, which erupted about 3 million years ago, but its exact age is unknown.

This activity would have helped form the Organ Pipes, according to Associate Professor Bernie Joyce from Melbourne University.

“Mt Warrenheip, Hanging Rock and the Organ pipes are all monogenetic, which is one period of life… which applies to the young ones from Western Victoria,” he said.

The Selwyn fault on the Mornington peninsula has divided the area for millions of years.

Dromana and District Historical Society president Peter Holloway said different types of vegetation grow on either side of Selwyn’s fault.

As a result of geological activity, Sorrento is made up of limestone, whereas Arthur’s Seat is made up of granite.

“The outcome of this geological event resulted in two types of rocks, which then led to their own type of vegetation,” he said.

Arthur’s Seat is abundant with banksias, which do not grow the other side of the fault, Mr Holloway said.

The volcano most likely to erupt nearby is Mt Gambier, 440km away in South Australia, which last erupted about 5,000 years ago.

Dr Joyce said on average, volcanoes in Victoria’s west and South Australia erupt every 2,000 years.

“Eruptions have happened in the lifetime of the aboriginal people, they would have seen Tower Hill erupt,” he said.

Scientists had known that aerosols cool the planet, and that big eruptions spew lots of aerosols up high. But nobody had calculated how smaller recent eruptions might affect climate, and many had assumed that stratospheric aerosols from volcanoes

Leat says the formation's conical shapes and cratered summits are signs of recent eruptions, meaning that almost all of these volcanoes are active. "This is the only place that's this active in the whole of the Antarctic Ocean," Leat says.

She's also taught students about volcanoes in Toll Gate Grammar School's Sunrise Science program. ”We talked about why volcanoes erupt, the buildup of gases inside them . . . and the students built a volcano,” she said. “We met before school started.

Underwater Antarctic volcanoes discovered in the Southern Ocean

South Sandwich Islands provide rich habitat

July 2011. Scientists from British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have discovered previously unknown volcanoes in the ocean waters around the remote South Sandwich Islands. Using ship-borne sea-floor mapping technology during research cruises onboard the RRS James Clark Ross, the scientists found 12 volcanoes beneath the sea surface - some up to 3km high. They found 5km diameter craters left by collapsing volcanoes and 7 active volcanoes visible above the sea as a chain of islands.

Rich habitat

The research is important also for understanding what happens when volcanoes erupt or collapse underwater and their potential for creating serious hazards such as tsunamis. Also this sub-sea landscape, with its waters warmed by volcanic activity creates a rich habitat for many species of wildlife and adds valuable new insight about life on earth.
