Katharine N. Mason, Alexandria teacher
Katharine N. Mason, who taught in Alexandria City public schools from the late 1940s until retiring in 1977, died July 4 of pneumonia at the Goodwin House retirement community in Alexandria. She was 93.
Miss Mason’s last job in Alexandria was at Parker-Gray Middle School. She received an award for meritorious service from the Education Association of Alexandria.
Katharine Natalie Mason was born in Washington County, Va., and graduated from high school in Abingdon, in southwestern Virginia. She received a teaching certification and a bachelor’s degree in education from what is now James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
Early in her career, she taught in Virginia’s Washington and Tazewell counties.
Miss Mason served as editor of the Goodwin House Gazette and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Alexandria.
She had no immediate survivors.

The Director of Alexandria Community Schools (ACS) is employed by the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and supervised by the ACPS Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives and Community Outreach.
The Director of ACS works in close collaboration with relevant Alexandria city government agencies, and with youth and family services agencies in particular; to support the planning, development and operation of high-quality community schools (CS) in Alexandria. The Director of ACS also is responsible for ensuring that key ACPS activities, programs and services are fully integrated and aligned with the mission and goals of designated schools, through joint planning with lead agencies serving the schools and school principals.
Job Description:
Support planning and the development and operations of Alexandria Community Schools, in consultation with the respective community schools, their principals and the relevant city government agencies, including the CS lead agencies and school staff.
Develop annual budgets reflecting the total revenues and expenses required to operate community schools.
Ensure the operation of high-quality community schools, in partnership with principals, designated lead agencies, and site directors.
Plan and coordinate community schoolsâ staff orientation, technical assistance and training in collaboration with the relevant city government agencies, and respective partnerships.
Ensure comprehensive evaluation of ACS using expert, independent evaluators.
Regularly advise and seek guidance from the Executive Director.
Support parentsâ substantive involvement in ACS, in partnership with principals, designated lead agencies, and site directors.
Support joint planning among school, agencies, funders, service providers and others responsible for programs in related service delivery systems (i.e., medical and mental health services).
Support planning and development of data-driven information management systems.
Contribute to the alignment of community schoolsâ goals with broader ACPS mission and goals.
Represent ACS at public forums, including local school board meetings and citywide meetings on public education, public policy, youth development, and after-school education.
Develop funding proposals and other resource development strategies for community schools.
May perform other additional duties or tasks as designated by supervisor.
