Ruger makes some nice Colt-type single action revolvers, also Cimmeron Arms makes authentic single actions in various styles. Your local gun dealer should be able to order what you are looking for if he/she doesn’t keep them in stock.

I’ve been making holsters for over 20yrs, and unless you’re just looking for something to do for fun, I would strongly recommend just BUYING a holster. It takes a bit of skill, knowledge about leather quality and leather CUT, and a few high quality tools.

If you want to do it on the cheap and make a very plain holster (likely of poor quality), then you can get it done for about $50-75. If you want to do it RIGHT, you’ll need several tools, and QUALITY leather, all of which you will end up spending a LOT more than just buying one outright.

At a minimum, you’ll need stiff posterboard or tag board (for the pattern), cardboard for mock ups, a shoulder bend of leather, stitching awl (to punch the thread holes), waxed or polyester thread, overstitch wheel, gouge, two needles (saddle stitch), leather dye, leather finish, applicator swabs, a VERY VERY sharp knife, piece of antler, and some burnishing (edging) compound.

To make the pattern, draw a line on your posterboard, then stand your revolver up on the sights (have to cock the hammer on an SAA to do this) with the rear sight and front sight centered on the line. VERY CAREFULLY, roll the revolver to one side (onto it’s right side for a right handed holster, left side for left handed holster. Trace around the revolver, being sure to mark the shape how you want the holster mouth to look, i.e. A smooth curve from the bottom of the trigger guard (or top of the trigger guard if you’re covering the trigger) to the top strap of the revolver (the sight line). Then trace another line, 3/4″ wider than this line. The 3/4″ line should only be on the outward SIDE and bottom, but not at the mouth of the holster. Cut along that 3/4″ line, just up to the “sight” line. Fold along the sight line, and trace the 3/4″ line onto the other side of the holster. On THAT side, what would be the side against your hip, leave the paper LONG above the mouth of the holster. This will be the strap that sits against the top of your gun, and then goes over your belt. You’ll have to be creative to determine the appropriate length to match your desired carry height. If you want the revolver to ride HIGH, with the grips totally above the belt, you will fold the hanger over along a line even with the TOP of the outside side. If you want it to hang LOW, you might have 4-6″ of excess before you fold the hanger.
