St. John the Divine Taps New Music Director

By Pia Catton

Choral music expert and organist Kent Tritle is moving from the Upper East Side’s St. Ignatius Loyola Church to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine to be its new Director of Cathedral Music and Organist, effective September 1.

Tritle – who is also the organist for the New York Philharmonic and the host of the WQXR radio program “The Choral Mix” – has spent 22 years at St. Ignatius Loyola, where he made the choral program among the city’s best.

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, on Amsterdam Avenue at 112th St. is the spiritual home of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the seat of the bishop.

Tritle was initially engaged to help in the search for a replacement for its outgoing music director Bruce Neswick, who is taking a position at Indiana University.

“I was very happy at St. Ignatius,” said Tritle. “I was consulting with the Cathedral about their search and what they were looking for in a director. It occurred to me that I’ve hit 50, I’ve got energy and, God willing, time to go somewhere and build another program.”

The Cathedral’s choir currently has about 24 adult singers (twelve paid staff singers and the rest volunteers) and 20 children. Tritle says he would like to grow those numbers significantly.

He plans to re-audition singers, but changes won’t happen overnight. “When one takes over a choir, it takes about three years for it to become your own,” he said, adding that by the five-year mark, the choir can really flourish.

He also hopes to add new concert series and music initiatives. A new fund-raising effort, the Friends of Cathedral Music, will be launched to support those goals.

“We want to use the music program as an artistic component at the Cathedral that will help draw the people of New York,” he said. “There is such opportunity and potential.”

After spending more than two decades at St. Ignatius Loyola, Tritle says he’s confident that the existing music staff will continue what he put in place.

“The parishioners and attendees are very devoted to that music program, and they will want it to continue. I am hoping to do anything I can to make sure the transition is smooth.

Sacred Musical Chairs: Tritle Leaving St. Ignatius Loyola for St ...

In a shake-up of New York’s close-knit world of organists and sacred music directors, Kent Tritle is leaving his longtime position as director of music ministries at St. Ignatius Loyola Church to become organist and director of music at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, officials said on Thursday.

Mr. Tritle, who is also organist of the New York Philharmonic, has been at St. Ignatius for 22 years, building it into a major center of sacred music in New York. He ran its professional choir, oversaw a parish choir and led more than 400 services a year. He starts at St. John’s on Sept. 1. Mr. Tritle replaces Bruce Neswick, who left to teach at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music.
